The BCI have granted a national licence to Newstalk.
What are your thoughts?
Personally I think it will lose a lot of the character that made it so popular with the original listeners, but I'm sure it'll gain other good aspects. I worry though that the sports coverage, which is what I love about the station, might decline.

yea heard that today on the show. i think it will be more bad than good. what about stuff like Henry's voxpop, hidden Dublin, and above all, our input. there will be less of us heard than there already is. the only positive thing that may happen is making this place more recognised and gain more members.only time will tell.

i just heard bout it there. thought it would be good but having read your comments i think you could be right alright. i may loose some of its charm and local influence. how much will it cover? i know its quasi national but wat does that mean?

Im pesimistic as it stands, but I like the idea of a call show from 10 at night. Means I wont be listening to repeats at night. Im defo happy about that. But Sean, oh god, there's nothing brightens my day like hearing the kids from Sheriff street talking funny stuff that, well, you know, is just funny. RTE is a country wide station and has worked, but it has no distinctive flavour or character. 106 has been Dublin raised and supported from the beginning. I hope Im proved wrong, as the extra aspects of the station could prove great. ILL GET TO LISTEN TO MONCRIEFF NO MATTER WHERE I AM!!! Did anyone think of that? These are my thoughts, now I shall meditate and prepare for my shift testing toilet duck for the future of Space Emu kind

I think it's a good thing. Being a culchie blow-in, I always rave about Séan & Co. and no-one at home knows what the heck I'm raving about. "Curse you, you elusive God of Broadband!". I think it's a good thing, now we can share 106 with countries on the west coast.

Fair play to them for getting the licence, they deserve it for creating a quality station. But I think some of the comments above are right,it might lose some of its insular charm. They'll just have to be careful how they deal with the change over, making the boggers (no offence lemon!) welcome but still keeping those of us in the capital feeling important.

Im defo happy about that. is there any site around this here interweb that outlines wot newstalk plans to do when they go nationwide. like where did u hear about the call show? and is that the bit that david norris will do (i heard they're bringing him in permanently)? or maybe will he take over from deco and his delightful city edition?
