Is anyone else kind of angered that it now costs 30c to send a text to the show? cos i am. thats a lot of money!

yea i'm pissed at this too...although i have noticed when i email in (apart from SMUT related material) it gets read out more so than a text. even if you do text in it's never gauranteed to b eread out so it's a double blow.

I have to admit I can probably afford it but in principle it sucks. The shows, especially Sean's, are made up largely of witty repartee from us folks. We do this for no more reward than hearing our gems on air. Now they want to charge us for the privilege of providing them with material. Shame 106, Shame.  |

the costing isn't the point. its the principle of it all.
there was no need to change over and the only reason it has been done is for financial gain.

i thought it would be only fair to post Sean's own response to this problem (i hope he doesn't mind). Here's the email i sent, and the reply i got back....

I am very disappointed to learn of NewsTalk's new premium rate text number. This will destroy your show. It will now cost more than 3 times more to send you a text. This will deiscourage texting and on a show like your's, where it's all about the texters, it will be devestating because so few people will text in.
Here's what you should: buy a SIM card just for the radio and put it in your phone; then give out that number as the text number and we can text you for cheap again.

If I had my way everyone would get to text in for nothing. However, such decisions are not, unfortunately, within the gift of the programme, and for technical reasons we have to use the same number as everyone else.
As a commercial radio station, Newstalk is a business and so it will, occasionally, make decisions with the aim of increasing revenue. As I understand it, the decision was taken because all the other commercial radio stations do the same. In its' defence, this isn't about greed: Newstalk is still a loss-making operation, (talk radio is much more expensive to produce than music radio) so they need to increase the revenue to stay on the air.
This isn't much comfort for people who now have to pay more for texts, I know. Sometimes, crap things happen and there's not much anyone can do about it. But seeing as you went to the trouble of writing in, I though you deserved an explantion.
