i txt this into seán ages ago but never read out...wonder why
is it just me or does anyone else NOT want newstalk to go nationwide. i like the comradery of listeners in dublin. although it is extremely popular station i think listeners are a minority. since i began listening, 2-3 yrs now, i have never bonded with as many taxi drivers when i get into the car and see newstalk on the dial. if the station went nationwide it would be like getting into the taxi and seeing today fm...nothing.
i dont want hidden dublin to turn into hidden Ireland. I dont want henry to be in mullingar discussing topics with the culshi public. i dont want ask the GP to turn into ask the VET (agricultural calls only please) its just not why i listen to it.
i listen to newstalk becasue its a DUBLIN talk radio station. if its a nationwide station it will be forced to deal with issues that are for the country. in my eyes going nationwide is selling out. i can understand people who drive for a living, nationwide, why they would want it to go nationwide. but not me. yes, maybe il get a better reception on my walkman but thats not what I want. i can live with a bit of crackling in my ear. even for 4-5 hrs a day. now thats dedication.
the only people that txt in the shows saying "go nationwide" are the one's that are driving.
going nationwiode will change the whole station in my opinion. presenters will be changed, shows will be changed.
discuss...
PS - regardless, if they get the licence they'll do it

moncriefs show is totally driven by the audience and because its a small audience based in small city where everyone knows about the city both geographically and culturally it wont work on a national level where people will be texting in about something in rural galway like jimmy rileys wifes sisters wedding at the stradbally valley hotel, also it will mean audience will at least triple and therefore make it impossible to get your text read out and therefore you wont be able to set the tone of the show and start discussion like you can now. p.s if they dont get the national licence the station will shut down as they are losing millions every year and are banking on the national licence

p.s the show will lose the intimacy it has now as the familar names that are regularly read out wont be read out as frequently if at all on the new show format.

I have an ingenious solution! Instead of getting a national radio licence (which will by law force them to cover national, not just Dublin, events) they could remain a Dublin station but broadcast not just on FM but on AM too. This would mean that Dubs could listen on FM, but when we go "down da country" we could listen on AM. Cos AM signals travel SO MUCH further than FM signals, they would easily cover the whole country. But it could still be a Dublin station. Perfect, eh?

thank god im not the only one who thinks this.
i thought this was being a bit selfish but the station will change and in my eyes it will be for the worst
